How to arrive

Dortmund is part of the Ruhr area located in the Midwest of Germany. As its biggest city it has gone through a change from a former "steel city" to a modern and cosmopolitan metropolis, acquiring renown all across Europe as an innovative location for technological development and the football capital in Germany.

Conference venue

The conference will take place at the Dortmunder U, a former brewery building in the center of Dortmund providing a great view over the city of Dortmund. Starting from there, a seven-minute walk brings you to the main railway station Dortmund Hauptbahnhof and it takes ten minutes by foot to the old market Alter Markt where you can find plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars.

How to get to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof (Hbf)

Dortmund has a minor international airport (DTM) which is located 10 km east of Dortmund. The next bigger airports are in Düsseldorf (DUS) and Cologne (CGN).

From Dortmund airport (DTM)

  • Bus and metro
  • The bus 490 goes every 20 minutes to Aplerbeck. From Aplerbeck you need to take the U-Bahn U 47 (metro) which comes every 10 or 15 minutes depending on the time of day to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof. For this connection you need to buy a ticket of the price category A3 (around 3€). For the bus you can buy the ticket cash on board and for the U-Bahn you can find vending machines on the track.
  • Airport-Express
  • Depending on the time of day, there is a bus every 30 or 60 minutes from the airport to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof. This takes around 25 minutes and the tickes can be bought for 9€ cash on board.
  • Airport-Shuttle
  • There is a shuttle from Dortmund airport to Holzwickede Bahnhof. From there you can reach Dortmund Hauptbahnhof by train. You need to take the RB 59. Including the connecting time this takes 30-40 minutes. The shuttle costs 3€ and the train another 6€. The tickets for the shuttle can be bought cash on board and for the train in a vending machine on the track.
  • Taxi
  • A Taxi from the airport to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof costs around 30€.

    From Düsseldorf airport (DUS)

    The next bigger airport is in Düsseldorf (DUS) which has several direct train connections to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof. Every 20-30 minutes you can take either the RE1, RE11 or RE6 which take around 50 minutes to Dortmund Hbf.

    From Cologne airport (CGN)

    The arrival from Cologne is possible but longer and more costly. The two fastest connections are by train:

  • S 19 and RE 1
  • Take the train S19 from the airport station Köln/Bonn Flughafen to Köln Hbf and from Köln Hbf the RE1 to Dortmund Hbf. The total time including the connecting is 1:50 hours. The cheapest option is to buy a SchöneReiseTicket for 27,00€ which can be bought on the website of Deutsche Bahn.
  • RE 6 and ICE 518
  • A slightly faster option (1:35 hours in total) is to take the RE 6 from Köln/Bonn Flughafen to Köln Hbf and the the ICE 518. The ticket is slightly more expensive (starting from 32€) and can be bought on the website of Deutsche Bahn as well.
